Chili Peppers and Health Properties

Chili pepper is a plant in the Capsicum genus that contains essentially bioactive compounds with different properties. Chili pepper had been previously studied regarding health promotion on obesity, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, little information on Thai local chili peppers concerning anti-obesity, anti-diabetes and anti-AD through key enzymes inhibitions is available. Thus, the purpose of this research was to reveal lipase (obesity), α-amylase/α-glucosidase (diabetes) and cholinesterase/beta-secretase (AD) inhibitory activities of Thai local chili peppers. Then, Thai local chili peppers with the highest enzyme inhibitory activities were selected for further investigation on their bioactive compounds. Additionally, these bioactive compounds had been further examined regarding their degrees of inhibition and types of inhibitors against these particular enzymes.
