Project Description

The Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mahidol University have agreed to a memorandum of understanding to jointly support the development of medical and health science personnel capacity using advanced techniques. This will be achieved with the assistance of experts from world-class institutions under the MFA – MU Capacity Building for Medical and Health Science Education Hub. This collaboration aims to benefit knowledge transfer, medical services, and the creation of regional and international medical networks, thereby enhancing knowledge and capabilities in medical and health sciences through the exchange of academic knowledge and experience with foreign specialists (Training the Trainers). This initiative will lead to improved patient care quality and the effective delivery of public medical services in line with the strategy of development diplomacy.

Furthermore, it ensures that Thai personnel receive training from foreign experts in essential fields, enabling them to disseminate this knowledge broadly within society, both domestically and internationally, especially in developing countries (Training the Others) according to the medical diplomacy strategy. Additionally, this cooperation will strengthen development partnerships with foreign countries through trilateral cooperation frameworks involving Mahidol University’s international partners under the Department of International Cooperation’s framework.

Under this cooperation, there are six projects from three departments, as follows:

  1. Pancreatic transplantation by the Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital.

  2. Basic to advanced kidney transplantation by the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital.

  3. Pediatric glaucoma course and live surgery by the Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital.

  4. Advanced corneal transplantation by the Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital. *

  5. Academic conference & hands-on workshop on rehabilitation medicine for physicians and allied health professionals in Thailand and the South East Asia region by the Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital.

  6. From single cell to big data: implementation of genomic data in infectious disease studies by the Faculty of Tropical Medicine. *

Noted: *

  • In 2022, the project “Advanced corneal transplantation” by the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital was cancelled due to external factors such as cornea donations and finding patients with corneal issues. As a result, under the MFA – MU Capacity Building for Medical and Health Science Education Hub collaboration, the number of projects was reduced to five.

  • In 2023, the project “From single cell to big data: implementation of genomic data in infectious disease studies” by the Faculty of Tropical Medicine was renamed to “Enhancing genomic sequencing capacity for tropical diseases.”

Progress and Outcomes of the Project

The 5 projects under this collaboration have been officially implemented by the relevant stakeholders according to the project plan continuously from 2021 to the present. The progress and outcomes of each project are detailed as follows:

Pancreatic transplantation

  • Pancreatic transplantation by the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital: Pancreatic transplantation was performed for 3 patients in September 2023.

Basic to advanced kidney transplantation

  • Basic kidney transplantation training was conducted in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic in October 2023.

  • The robotic kidney transplantation team will participate in training in France in November 2023, and French experts will be invited to conduct a workshop in Thailand in early 2024.

  • A press conference titled “Success in Robotic Assisted Kidney Transplant for 3 Patients, the First in Thailand and ASEAN” was held on April 10, 2024, in collaboration with expert medical teams from Rangueil University Hospital, France.

Pediatric glaucoma Course and Live Surgery

  • Thailand International Conference: Things You Need to Know in Childhood was organized in March 2022, featuring experts from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Thailand. The event was attended by 229 participants online from Indonesia, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand.

  • The Sight Saver Hybrid Event was conducted in August 2023 with 201 participants. The training was delivered by 10 experts from Thailand, Japan, and the United States.

Academic conference & hands-on workshop on rehabilitation medicine for physicians and allied health professionals in Thailand and the South East Asia region

This project consists of 5 sub-projects, 2 of which have been completed:

  • The Offloading Footwear for Diabetic Foot Patients Workshop was completed in December 2022 via a hybrid format, with 90 participants from Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. Participants received training from 4 international experts from the USA, the Netherlands, and Ireland.

  • The Neurogenic Bladder in Spinal Cord Injury Patients Workshop was conducted in February 2023, with 140 participants from Myanmar, Nepal, and Thailand. Training was provided by 3 international experts from Belgium, Germany, and Malaysia.

Enhancing genomic sequencing capacity for tropical diseases

  • Under the original project “From Single Cell to Big Data Implementation of Genomic Data in Infectious Disease Studies,” trainees were selected in 2022 to learn advanced bioinformatics through a “training the trainer” approach for Southeast Asian countries. Monthly online training sessions were conducted for 10 trainees per month, and a global COVID-19 tracking training session was organized for international surveillance teams. The “Enhancing Genomic Sequencing Capacity for Tropical Diseases” project includes 4 sub-activities, with the first activity scheduled for May and concluding in August 2024.
