Project Description
The project is a partnership between the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Mahidol University aiming to promote sustainable development through knowledge and skill upgrades to Myanmar human capital. Under collaborative scholarship scheme in which the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs provided funding of 70% and Mahidol University contributed another 30%, qualified candidates will be recruited and enrolled in undergraduate and graduate study programs at Mahidol University. The Project plan was to provide full scholarships for 28 Master’s and 16 Bachelor recipients in the areas of Population studies, Public Health, Healthcare studies, Engineering, Environment and resource studies, Nursing, Physical Therapy, and Information and Communication Technology as well as 4 Capacity Building projects. There are altogether 12 Faculties and 3 Institutes, participating in this project including Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Faculty of Information Communication and Technology, Faculty of Medical Technology, Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Physical Therapy, Faculty of Public Health, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Graduate Studies, ASEAN Institute for Health Development, Institute for Population and Social Research, Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia.

Progress and Outcomes of the Project
The 5 projects under this collaboration have been officially implemented by the relevant stakeholders according to the project plan continuously from 2021 to the present. The progress and outcomes of each project are detailed as follows:
Pancreatic transplantation

Pancreatic transplantation by the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital: Pancreatic transplantation was performed for 3 patients in September 2023.

Basic to advanced kidney transplantation

Basic kidney transplantation training was conducted in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic in October 2023.

The robotic kidney transplantation team will participate in training in France in November 2023, and French experts will be invited to conduct a workshop in Thailand in early 2024.

A press conference titled “Success in Robotic Assisted Kidney Transplant for 3 Patients, the First in Thailand and ASEAN” was held on April 10, 2024, in collaboration with expert medical teams from Rangueil University Hospital, France.

Pediatric glaucoma Course and Live Surgery

Thailand International Conference: Things You Need to Know in Childhood was organized in March 2022, featuring experts from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Thailand. The event was attended by 229 participants online from Indonesia, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand.

The Sight Saver Hybrid Event was conducted in August 2023 with 201 participants. The training was delivered by 10 experts from Thailand, Japan, and the United States.

Academic conference & hands-on workshop on rehabilitation medicine for physicians and allied health professionals in Thailand and the South East Asia region
This project consists of 5 sub-projects, 2 of which have been completed:

The Offloading Footwear for Diabetic Foot Patients Workshop was completed in December 2022 via a hybrid format, with 90 participants from Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. Participants received training from 4 international experts from the USA, the Netherlands, and Ireland.

The Neurogenic Bladder in Spinal Cord Injury Patients Workshop was conducted in February 2023, with 140 participants from Myanmar, Nepal, and Thailand. Training was provided by 3 international experts from Belgium, Germany, and Malaysia.

Enhancing genomic sequencing capacity for tropical diseases

Under the original project “From Single Cell to Big Data Implementation of Genomic Data in Infectious Disease Studies,” trainees were selected in 2022 to learn advanced bioinformatics through a “training the trainer” approach for Southeast Asian countries. Monthly online training sessions were conducted for 10 trainees per month, and a global COVID-19 tracking training session was organized for international surveillance teams. The “Enhancing Genomic Sequencing Capacity for Tropical Diseases” project includes 4 sub-activities, with the first activity scheduled for May and concluding in August 2024.
