Project Description

The Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mahidol University have agreed to a memorandum of understanding to jointly support the development of medical and health science personnel capacity using advanced techniques. This will be achieved with the assistance of experts from world-class institutions under the MFA – MU Capacity Building for Medical and Health Science Education Hub. This collaboration aims to benefit knowledge transfer, medical services, and the creation of regional and international medical networks, thereby enhancing knowledge and capabilities in medical and health sciences through the exchange of academic knowledge and experience with foreign specialists (Training the Trainers). This initiative will lead to improved patient care quality and the effective delivery of public medical services in line with the strategy of development diplomacy.

Furthermore, it ensures that Thai personnel receive training from foreign experts in essential fields, enabling them to disseminate this knowledge broadly within society, both domestically and internationally, especially in developing countries (Training the Others) according to the medical diplomacy strategy. Additionally, this cooperation will strengthen development partnerships with foreign countries through trilateral cooperation frameworks involving Mahidol University’s international partners under the Department of International Cooperation’s framework.

Under this cooperation, there are six projects from three departments, as follows:

1. Pancreatic transplantation by the Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital.

2. Basic to advanced kidney transplantation by the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital.

3. Pediatric glaucoma course and live surgery by the Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital.

4. Advanced corneal transplantation by the Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital. *

5. Academic conference & hands-on workshop on rehabilitation medicine for physicians and allied health professionals in Thailand and the South East Asia region by the Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital.

6. From single cell to big data: implementation of genomic data in infectious disease studies by the Faculty of Tropical Medicine. *

Noted: *

• In 2022, the project “Advanced corneal transplantation” by the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital was cancelled due to external factors such as cornea donations and finding patients with corneal issues. As a result, under the MFA – MU Capacity Building for Medical and Health Science Education Hub collaboration, the number of projects was reduced to five.

• In 2023, the project “From single cell to big data: implementation of genomic data in infectious disease studies” by the Faculty of Tropical Medicine was renamed to “Enhancing genomic sequencing capacity for tropical diseases.”
