1) Ernst Mach Grant to study at an Austrian University of Applied Sciences 2023/2024

Ernst Mach Grant for studying at an Austrian University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule). This programme is aimed at students from non-European universities who wish to spend a semester or two at an Austrian University of Applied Sciences (‘Fachhochschule’).

Target Group: Undergraduates and Graduates from non-European universities
Type of Grant (Duration): Study/Research grants (4-10 months)
Target institution: All Austrian Universities of Applied Sciences (‘Fachhochschulen’, see www.fachhochschulen.ac.at)
Duration: 4 to 10 months
Age limit: 35 years

2) Franz Werfel Grant for Research in Austria 2023/2024 (Postdocs)

The Franz Werfel Grant is intended for persons with above-average qualifications, preferably with teaching experience and employment at a university, who focus on Austrian literature. The duration of the scholarship is four to nine months; an extension to up to 18 months is possible. Persons who consumed at least 12 scholarship months can apply for the follow-up support program.
Target group: Postgraduates, Postdocs, Researchers, Doctoral students and Scientists
Countries of origin: all
Duration: Research grants 4 to 9 months (an extension of up to 18 months is possible)

3) Richard Plaschka (Postdocs)

The Richard Plaschka Fellowship is aimed at researchers in the historical sciences who are primarily occupied with Austrian history. The scholarship duration is four to twelve months; an extension of up to 18 months is possible. After a scholarship period of 12 months, there is the possibility to apply for the follow-up support programme.

Target group: PostDocs as well as PraeDocs from countries not familiar with the Habilitation system (state doctorate/postdoctoral lecture qualification).
Countries of origin: all except Austria
Duration: Research grants 4 to 12 months (an extension of up to 18 months is possible in certain cases)

4) Ernst Mach – worldwide

The Ernst Mach Grant worldwide is targeted at young researchers from all disciplines and countries (except Austria) who wish to pursue a research project in Austria.

Target group: Postgraduates, Doctoral students, Postdocs and young researchers from all disciplines and countries (except Austria)
Duration: Research grants (1 to 9 months)
Age limit: 35 years
Closing date for applications: online application is available from October to February 1st of the following year

5) Ernst Mach follow-up grant (EZA)

The Ernst Mach Follow-Up Grant is aimed at postdocs from non-European developing countries who are former OeAD scholarship holders. The grant is intended to support the applicant’s scientific carrier and to further and deepen the cooperation with Austrian higher education institutions and universities.

Target group: Post-doctoral researchers and lecturers from non-European developing countries, who research and/or teach at higher education institutions or universities and have already received a grant administered by the OeAD-GmbH in the past. At the beginning of the grant period, at least 3 years must have passed since the last funded research visit to Austria.
Duration: Research Grants (1 to 3 months)
Age limit: 50 years
Closing date for applications: Online applications are open from November to 1st February of the following year and from June to 1st November.

6) Ernst Mach-ASEA-UNINET Short-term Research Grant

Applications for Ernst Mach – ASEA-UNINET Short-term Research Grants are open to Postdocs who are involved in teaching and researching at an ASEA-UNINET member university in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand or Vietnam and who would like to conduct short research stay (1-2 months!) at an ASEA-UNINET member university in Austria.

Attention! Please mind the difference between the Ernst Mach-Grant – ASEA-UNINET (which aims at postgraduates who want to conduct a full or partial PhD study in Austria and at Postdoc researchers who want to come to Austria for a research stay over a period of 3 to 9 months) and the new Ernst Mach – ASEA-UNINET Short-term Research Grants announced on this page.

Target group: Postdocs in ASEA-UNINET member universities
Country of origin: Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand or Vietnam
Target country: Austria
Duration: Research grants (max. 1-2 months)
Grant benefit: 1,150 euro per monthScholarship holders from Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar may also receive a travel costs subsidy of max. EUR 1,000. No travel costs subsidy from the Austrian side for scholarship holders from other countries!
Maximum age: 45 years (child-raising periods can be taken into account)
Language proficiency: Very good knowledge of English and/or German
Closing date for applications: Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and have to be submitted 2 to 9 months prior to the planned research stay.

7) Ernst Mach Grants – ASEA-UNINET

The Ernst Mach Grant ASEA-UNINET is open to undergraduates, graduates, postgraduates and postdocs from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines or Vietnam in all fields of study who want to study or do a research project in Austria.

Target group: undergraduates, graduates of artistic fields for a study visit in the field of music practice; postgraduates doing a doctoral/PhD programme at an ASEA-UNINET member university in Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, or Vietnam; postgraduates who want to do a doctoral/PhD programme in Austria and fulfill the requirements for admission; postdocs who are involved in teaching and research at an ASEA-UNINET member university in Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, or Vietnam.

Age limit: 35 years for undergraduates, graduates and postgraduates, 45 years for postdocs (at the time of the application)
Duration: undergraduates, graduates: 9 months; post docs: 3 to 9 months; postgraduates: max. 36 months
Closing date for applications: 1st March for each year
