     The Mahidol University Seed Grant Program is a strategic initiative of the Global Partnerships Division designed to strengthen international collaborations, foster interdisciplinary research, and support innovative solutions to global challenges. The program serves as a platform to connect Mahidol faculty with leading researchers and institutions worldwide, enabling joint projects that combine academic excellence with real-world impact.

     Through the Seed Grant Program, partnerships extend beyond conventional academic exchanges, where researchers can evolve into dynamic collaborations that nurture innovation, empower knowledge sharing, and generate outcomes with meaningful societal, environmental, and economic value. By seeding these opportunities, Mahidol University reaffirms its commitment to advancing global research partnerships and contributing to a sustainable future.

This global engagement reflects the program’s mission: to transform research partnerships into pathways for innovation, sustainable growth, and positive societal change.

Eligible MU Seed Grant activities would include, but are not limited to:

  • Facilitating internationally co-authored publications.

  • Visits to engage with research groups to establish new contacts and explore possibilities for future collaboration.

  • Preparation of collaborative bids to attract research funding.

  • Development of new interdisciplinary research programmes.

  • Capacity building for research.

  • Other activities that facilitate collaboration among faculty at both universities.

Matchmaking & Networking
– Researchers connect to explore shared interests and potential collaborations.

Team Formation
– Joint teams are formed between Mahidol and partner universities.

Proposal Submission
– Proposals are submitted with faculty endorsement via the application portal.

Steering Committee Review & Selection
– Proposals are evaluated for quality, innovation, and real-world impact.

Award & Implementation
– Selected projects receive funding and begin implementation.

Interim & Final Report Submission
– Grantees share progress and outcomes.

The MU Seed Grant Program is an initiative by Mahidol University to support early-stage research collaborations with international partners. It aims to foster innovative ideas, strengthen global partnerships, and create real-world impact aligned with sustainable development.

Applications are open to Mahidol University faculty members in collaboration with international researchers or institutions. At least one PI (Principal Investigator) must be affiliated with Mahidol University.

The program supports projects that demonstrate strong potential for international collaboration, innovation, and contributions to sustainable development. Proposals are encouraged to be interdisciplinary, impactful, and scalable into larger external grants or long-term partnerships.

The level of funding depends on the partner universities and will be announced at the time of each call for proposals.

The funding period typically lasts 12 months from the start date, with possible adjustments depending on project needs.

Applicants must complete the Seed Grant application form and submit it through the Mahidol University e-Office portal, accompanied by an endorsement letter from their respective faculty. All guidelines and templates are available for download on the Seed Grant program page.

No. Proposals must include at least one international partner institution or researcher, as the program’s core purpose is to strengthen global collaboration.

Funding may cover research expenses, fieldwork, workshops, mobility (travel/visits), and knowledge-sharing activities. Personnel salaries and infrastructure costs are generally not eligible.

Applications are reviewed by a selection committee based on:
• Relevance to sustainable development and real-world impact
• Potential for long-term international collaboration
• Academic quality and feasibility of the project
• Interdisciplinary and innovative approaches

Extensions may be considered on a case-by-case basis but must be submit the extension request letter 1 month before the project ending period.

Grantees are required to submit a final report summarizing the project outcomes, impacts, and potential next steps. Grantees are also encouraged to disseminate their findings through publications in high-impact journals or other relevant scholarly platforms.
