SiMSET: Siriraj Medical Simulation for Education and Training
“SiMSET” consists of the head quarter is located on the 10th floor of Adulyadejvikrom building with the area of 1,600 square meters. There are 2 classrooms (40 and 80 seats), 11 simulation scenario rooms such as intensive care unit, operating theaters, emergency rooms and general wards. This center is well equipped with audiovisual, monitoring and medical equipments including various kinds of high fidelity manikins. Standardized patients are also available for training. Moreover, there are resuscitation rooms and simulated medical gas system in this area. This center is beneficial for clinical skill training in emergency situations, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, prevention and management of common or high impact medical errors including other essential skills such as decision making, communication and team management. Learning strategies emphasize learners’ active participation and reflection including trainers’ facilitation and debriefing in safe environment. These techniques promote competency assessment and preparation of learners before real patients hands-on practice which foster patient and learner safety outcome.
Nowaday, simulation training is widely accepted as a bridge between classroom and real clinical practice for medical and health professional students. Even clinicians and residents, simulation trainings help them well prepared for rare events or unexpected clinical crisis and non technical skills which are more and more relevant in medical and health professional education.
Previously, this teaching and learning strategy had been occasionally conducted in scattered departments. Now, all kinds of medical simulators include cadavers, electronic high fidelity manikins, low fidelity manikins, part task, standardized patients and simulated computer program are gathered and strategically managed under the umbrella of SiMSET.
Other related center includes; SiTEC (Siriraj Training and Education Center for Clinical Skills) is located on the 4th floor of Srisavarindhira building. This center serves advanced procedural and surgical skill training with cadavers for residency programs, national and international training.
The Center of Applied Thai Traditional Medicine, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, has many responsibilities. The Center provides applied Thai traditional medicine education and related services, as well as the manufacturing of herbal medicines.
Another important responsibility is to conduct formal research and development for the purposes of advancing Thai traditional medicine and further promoting its acceptance and use among the Thai general public.
A new philosophy to develop Thai traditional medicine
Professor Dr. Ouay Ketusinh, a renowned professor of western medicine from the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, who believed that for Thai traditional medicine to be established in the health care system and become sustainable, Thai traditional medicine itself must have the potential to develop and that potential comes from Thai traditional practitioners who are not only professionally competent but also have knowledge of basic medical sciences similar to practitioners and other health-related professionals of western medicine. This field was later named Applied Thai Traditional Medicine to distinguish it from conventional Thai traditional medicine.
In 1930, Professor Dr. Quay Ketusinh set up a foundation under the patronage of the Supreme Patriarch and HRH Prince Maha Chakri Sirindhon, Later on, in 1982, he founded a school, named Ayurved-vldyalaya (Jivok Komarbhacc) to teach a three-year course in Thai traditional medicine based on his philosophy In 1934, an applied Thai traditional medicine clinic was set up to provide services in Thai traditional medicine and serve as a place where students could gain practical experience. The school also has a manufacturing unit to produce herbal medicine for the treatment of patients in the clinic. In 1998, the school was moved to Paholyothin 5 road and the name of the school was changed to Ayurved School.
Mahidol University has three campuses in the Bangkok metropolitan area: the large suburban campus at Salaya in nearby Nakhon Pathom province, and two inner city campuses in Bangkok Noi and Phayathai in the Bangkok area, in addition to a downtown high-rise office site for the College of Management. Mahidol's campuses are electronically linked by a state-of-the-art computer network which provides academic, research and administrative computing services to the various departments of the university and to all staff and students.
Salaya Campus, opened in 1982, is located just a few hundred meters from Bangkok's city limits in Phuttamonthon District, Nakhon Pathom Province, on 520 acres (210 hectares) of natural beauty, landscaped gardens and tropical foliage. The relaxing semi-rural setting, within easy reach of central Bangkok, makes it ideal for studying or working in tranquility without losing out on the myriad opportunities available in the city proper.
